Getting into employment is not easy, particularly for young people, but apprenticeship schemes provide valuable opportunities whilst shaping the next generation’s employability skills.

At this year’s returning DerbyshireLive Business Awards, employers who are helping the region’s youth with life-changing apprenticeship opportunities will be recognised and a winner will walk away with a special prize on the night.

The ‘Apprentice Employer of the Year’ category will award the employer that has gone above and beyond to take on a number of apprentices, providing them with the support and training needed to kick-start their careers.

Sponsoring the award is one of the region’s leading apprenticeship and training firms, Futures for Business. They work with employers to develop a skilled, engaged and motivated workforce, driving productivity and success.

Sandra Cowley is the Commercial Director at Futures for Business and explained why they decided to come on board as category sponsors.

“Futures for Business deliver apprenticeships and work with both businesses and individuals to ensure a positive and successful process. We know how much of an impact apprentices have, whether newly employed or through the development of existing staff,” she said.

“Sponsoring this award is a chance to recognise and celebrate businesses who are leading in apprenticeships.

“No matter what sector you’re in, business is becoming increasingly competitive. At Futures, we believe staff are the key. By investing in them, you'll reap the benefits for years to come.”

As category sponsors, Futures for Business has the responsibility of deciding on the three shortlisted finalists as well as the eventual winner of the award. Sandra explained what they will be looking for from the winners.

“It’s not just about having an apprentice, we're looking for a business that challenges and excites their apprentices and inspires them towards personal and professional growth.”

Demonstrating the impact apprenticeship’s have on business sustainability, Futures for Business themselves will also be enhancing their own offerings this year.

“We’re always assessing performance and quality, which means we’re continually enhancing our offering so it’s exactly what the client needs,” said Sandra.

The awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday 3 June at Derby College’s Roundhouse Venue. After a Champagne reception, guests will enjoy a three-course meal, followed by the prize giving and a bill of entertainment and charity draws.
